SCBA 2023 Bee Schools: Tuesdays starting February 7th – Register Now!

The 2023 Surry County Bee Schools will be held for six Tuesdays starting on February 7th. Both Beginning Beekeeping and Junior Beekeeping classes will be held at the extension office. The Junior Beekeeper Class will be at the extension office in the kitchen. Details below.

Registration for both classes is required. Registration is open now. To register, call Surry County Cooperative Extension at 336-401-8025. Please register by January 31st.

Beginning Beekeeping Bee School


Tuesdays, February 7 through March 14
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Plus a field day to be scheduled

Note: We can only accommodate 100 students

“The Beekeeper’s Handbook, 5th Edition” by Diana Sammataro.
You may request a book at registration time and pay for it at first class or you can purchase online. Book is currently $26.68 on Amazon.

Topics covered will include:

  • Introduction to Beekeeping
  • The colony, organization, and life cycle of the honeybee
  • Equipment needed to get started
  • How to assemble equipment
  • Seasonal hive management of the colonies
  • Pests and diseases of the bees
  • Harvesting and processing honey and other hive products
  • A field day to work with the bees

Refreshments will be provided.

There will be an end of class drawing for a complete 10 frame hive set up!

Surry County Junior Beekeeper Program

Tuesdays, February 7 through March 14
7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Activities will include:

  • Learn about the parts of the hive
  • Learn about the anatomy of a honeybee
  • Learn how  to light a smoker
  • Learn how to assemble equipment
  • Dress in a bee suit
  • Open a hive
  • Identify worker bees, drones, and queens

Be a certified Junior Beekeeper at the end of the program!
